Wealth and career are important, but so is health; whatever our situation in life may be, we can all choose to lead healthy lifestyles. This is a belief that Gurcharanjit holds dear and it has guided him through much of his adult life and especially in his work as a grassroots leader.
“In Singapore, many people lead very hectic lives, and for the majority of the people, exercise is something they’ll do only when they have the time to spare,” Gurcharanjit said.
To encourage more people to adopt healthy lifestyles, Gurcharanjit leads a team of volunteers in organising activities that can be enjoyed by everyone in his neighbourhood. One of their many initiatives is the annual Cyclathon which see residents cycle in relay along the nearby park connector.
“Our Cyclathon is one of our most enduring activities in bringing people of all age groups together. During the event, people relax and enjoy the scenic ride, and this sets the atmosphere for fellowship and communal bonding,” he added.
However, Gurcharanjit feels that healthy lifestyles go beyond merely doing exercises. He believes that people need nurturing living environments and healthy relationships to experience wholistic well-being in their bodies, minds and souls.
Towards this end, a communal garden has been set up for residents to enjoy and social activities like singing sessions and festive celebrations are regular features in his neighbourhood’s annual calendar. In addition, a Seniors Club has been established to promote social interaction among the elderly.
“Over the years, I notice how much the elderly population in my neighbourhood has grown. Many of these elderly residents need avenues for interaction as many of them have spent a large part of their lives working and taking care of their families, and thus have few friends and pastimes of their own. Through our Seniors Club, we encourage our elderly residents to engage in weekly exercises, gatherings and social activities so as to enjoy an enriching and fulfilling time in their Golden Years,” Gurcharanjit said.
Like Gurcharanjit has found, there are many areas in your neighbourhood you can contribute to. Whether you enjoy working with the youth, the working adults or the elderly, there is definitely an area you can carve a niche of your own.
