102 couples said “I Do” on 20.11.2011

Dragonboating coupleThere was excitement in the air and the heavy downpour did not dampen the moods of the 102 couples who were gathered under a white marquee at Marina Waterfront on the special date of 20.11.2011.

It was THE day for 92 couples who were taking a step towards marital bliss and 10 couples who were renewing their marriage vows across 21 solemnisation points at Marina Waterfront. Family and friends gathered to witness the blissful union.

Clad in traditional wedding attire, Mr Andrew Chen and Ms Soh Kai Yiing kick-started the event with a grand entry in a wedding sedan as they led the other 101 couples in a grand march-in.

Mr Chen shared, “Participating in the event was a wonderful experience for us. This was certainly a meaningful event for couples to tie the knot and celebrate our joy together with our family and friends .”

Mr Nicholas Aw and Ms Emily Lin, both dragon boat enthusiasts, accomplished a team feat by cruising into the wedding venue on a dragon boat rowed by their wedding entourage. This unconventional couple went a step further to make their wedding truly stand out with the bride donning a customised t-shirt and a pair of shorts. The jubilant bride shared, “We got to know each other when we were freelancing as dragon boat coaches with the People’s Association (PA) nine years ago. PA not only helped me pursue my passion in dragon boating, but also indirectly played a role in helping me find my soulmate.”

Into its third year, this was the first “I Do” Weddings which invited married couples to renew their marriage vows and pledge their eternal love to their spouse. Inviting married couples to participate in the ‘I Do’ Weddings also helped highlight the importance of family values such as love and respect to the younger couples present.

For Mr Lim Wui Meng and Mdm Yeong Suet Mui, one of the 10 couples who renewed their marriage vows, this event held a special meaning for them as they celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary on this date. Their son, Mr Daniel Lim, 15, said, “I am very excited to be able to witness my parents’ renewal of marriage vows. They have been very loving and committed to each other all these years. ”

The participating couples were solemnised and renewed their marriage vows by PA’s very own Family Life Champions (FLCs) as part of PA’s effort to promote family life. In fact, 58 PA’s FLC solemnisers were busy conducting about a third of civil marriages in Singapore on the popular date of 20.11.2011.

“I Do” Weddingswas organised by the PA Family Life Section and Lianhe Wanbao, in celebration of marriages in the community and to encourage more couples to tie the knot. Joining in the celebrations was Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who congratulated the happy newly-weds.
