Celebrating 40 years of engaging youths

Helping youths in the community realise their potential and hone their leadership and community spirit. That’s what the People’s Association Youth Movement (PAYM) has done for the last 40 years.
As part of the 40th Anniversary Celebrations on 19 November 2011, over a thousand current and former youth leaders, senior grassroots leaders and partners joined in the celebrations at Suntec City Convention Centre.
Seven Youth Executive Committee (YEC) members were awarded the Special Recognition Awards at the anniversary celebration. These youths had made outstanding contributions to the youth arena through meaningful and sustainable outreach programmes.
Gracing the celebratory dinner, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Minister for Finance and Manpower, challenged the PAYM and YECs to continue to nurture and develop youths despite the growing disparity in interests and social needs of the youths today. PAYM and YEC members were also encouraged to continue working in tandem with PA in promoting social cohesion, racial harmony and an active community.
The highlight of the anniversary dinner was the special musical performance put together by 50 youths from the PAYM network. The vibrant performers showcased their talents through song and dance, and a special skit which told the story of 5 youths who came together, became friends and realised their dreams by drawing inspiration from each other. The night ended on a high note with a special song composition by Ms K Prabha from The Jelutung CC YEC. Titled ‘Like You’, the song encouraged youths to keep believing in themselves and fight for their dreams.
The PAYM pledged to continue providing youths with ample opportunities for them to develop their potentials, realise their dreams and do more, not just for their fellow peers, but also for the wider community, so that the spirit of “Youth for the Youth, Youth for the Community” continues to grow.
