Children’s Christmas wishes came true

Over 100 children in Chong Pang Constituency had their Christmas wishes granted early this year at “Christmas Joy @ Chong Pang” on 18 December 2011. Adviser to Chong Pang Grassroots Organisations, Mr K Shanmugam, gave out presents to the children, all of whom were from lower-income households.
Organisers from the Chong Pang CC Youth Executive Committee (YEC) invited the children, who were nominated by schools, voluntary welfare organisations, and selected from the constituency’s welfare database, to make a wish for a Christmas gift.
Through a dedicated Festive Wishes website and shout-outs through email and Facebook, the YEC managed to gather the support of more than 50 volunteers, many of whom were first time volunteers! Staff from the Khoo Teck Puat hospital donated $1,500 when they learnt about the event.
One such volunteer is Ms Alice Lim, 48 years old who works as a Legal Executive. “I received an email from the community club and thought that I can do my bit to make this Christmas a different one for these children and it is near my home.”
11-year-old Keane Ng granted the wish of one child using his own pocket money. “My mum always tells me that Christmas is a time of giving and to be able to give is a blessing.”
Toys were among the most popular wishes. 10-year-old Heng Swee Yong, for instance, was elated when he was told that his wish for a Beyblade toy set would be granted this year.
Mr Tan En, Organising Chairman of Christmas Joy @ Chong Pang said, “Most of our events tend to focus on the community's needs instead of wants. Therefore, we decided to do something different this festive season and grant the wishes of the children from needy families here in Chong Pang.”
The event touched the hearts of both the volunteers and the families of the beneficiaries and was such a success that the YEC intends to make this an annual signature event. If you missed the opportunity to give a gift of joy to the needy children this year, do look out for similar opportunities to do so next year!
