Couples renew their vows on dragon boats

08 March 2010 2 comments

Our vows againTwenty couples celebrated the Chinese Valentine’s Day – ‘Yuan Xiao Jie’ by renewing their vows on dragon boats. This was the first dragon boating event organised by the Family Life Champions (FLCs) from Braddell Heights, Kampong Ubi-Kembangan and MacPherson constituencies for couples solemnised by them, to integrate the couples into the community.

The couples had great fun trying out dragon boating for the first time.  Together, they paddled to the middle of Kallang Basin and toasted after renewing their vows. Guest-of-Honour, Mr Matthias Yao Chih, Mayor of South East District and Adviser to MacPherson grassroots organisations shared marriage tips with the couples.  He told them that they must put in effort in a relationship to ride out all storms, very much like the rowers of a dragon boat putting in equal amount of effort to stabilise the boat.

“Paddle for Love” was the first community event for many of the couples including Mr Dennis Koh and his wife, Mdm Jane Teo, both 27 years old.  “After the arrival of our baby girl, my wife and I hardly have any couple time together. When our solemniser invited us to this event, we thought that it would be a good chance for us to spend some quality time together and get to know other couples.  We really enjoyed ourselves!” said Mr Koh.

Since 2005, eligible FLCs have been appointed as grassroots solemnisers to promote family life and celebrate marriages. Mr Tay Poey Kiang, PBM, Mr Raymond Wee and Mdm Lim Lee Kee, PBM, all grassroots solemnisers and FLCs, initiated this event to create a marriage-friendly environment.

The day ended on a high note with a “Lo Hei” session enjoyed by all the couples.
