Expressing Creativity with Balloons and Straws
07 November 2011 0 comments

On the evening of 29 October 2011, the usually quiet corridors of Boon Lay CC came alive with the buzz and anticipation of the first major event held within its newly renovated walls. ArtsForUs, an arts festival, aimed to help promote the arts as a platform to foster greater family ties and showcase the diversity of performances and arts in Singapore today.
Not one to be left behind, the Boon Lay CC Youth Executive Committee (YEC) rose to the occasion to celebrate expression and creativity with the Balloon Sculpting Interest Group (BSIG).
The BSIG members wowed the crowd with their deft hands and gave residents the opportunity to sculpt their own balloons. Some residents grimaced at the sound the balloons made when they were twisted and were worried about bursting the balloons. The guidance from the volunteers ensured that every resident walked away with a creation of their own.
Seizing this occasion, the Boon Lay youths launched the Crafts Interest Group. During its debut, the group taught residents how to make handicrafts using a simple household item – the drinking straw.
Members of the Crafts Interest Group guided residents to make hearts, stars and even stringing bracelets, from straws. The group also introduced the idea of making pictures entirely from straws. Drawing inspirations from Halloween, residents created pictures featuring skeletons and pumpkins amongst others. Even a two-year-old toddler tried her hand at straw craft, showing how art truly transcends age.
To end off the evening, Mr Yam Ah Mee, PA’s Chief Executive Director, performed a lively dance number to rapturous applause and thanked the youths who had participated in the evening’s programme.
