Grassroots Seminar 2011

“ALL CARE” was the buzz word during the Grassroots Seminar held on 15 October 2011 at the Suntec City Convention Centre. ALL CARE, which refers to using all “channels” to reach out to residents of all “ages”, “races” and “estates” was emphasised as the way forward for the People’s Association (PA) by both Deputy Chairman of the PA, Mr Lim Swee Say and Chief Executive Director Mr Yam Ah Mee throughout the half day event.

Mr Lim shared with more than 1,000 grassroots leaders (GRLs), staff and volunteers that PA currently reaches out to one in three Singapore residents. However, he added that PA had fallen short on its outreach to three groups: Younger Singaporeans aged 22 to 49, ethnic minorities and those residing in five-room or executive HDB flats and private housing. These groups would receive special attention as PA doubles its efforts to reach out to them in the next few years. Mr Lim also emphasised that a key challenge faced by PA would be ensuring that its outreach is not just more extensive but also more inclusive through the ALL CARE approach.

During the session, grassroots leaders shared on early ALL CARE success stories from various constituencies, where interest groups ranging from community gardening to brisk walking have served as platforms to bring people of different races, ages and estates together to make friends, interact and bond.

New friendships were forged during the seminar as GRLS got to know one another and strategies for engagement were shared with one another formally and informally throughout the event.  It was evident that the grassroots leaders and volunteers who came for the event left convinced of the ALL CARE Way forward for PA.

“I strongly believe the ALL CARE concept is an impactful one that will benefit the community as a whole,” said Lina Chong, 33, Chairman of the PAYM Central Youth Council. “It will guide us (grassroots leaders) in bringing residents from all walks of life together through various channels and hence create a greater sense of belonging for all members of the community.”
