Health Champions get more to lead a healthy lifestyle

12 March 2010 4 comments

At a health screeningOne loves to eat while the other has been a smoker since he was 12 years old. Both middle-aged men had been leading an unhealthy lifestyle until recently when they were appointed as Health Champions.

Mr Mohamed Hashim Bin Mohd Shah, 50, Chairman of Marsiling Zone 2 RC, previously weighed 91 kilos but managed to lose 8 kilos within two months after taking up regular exercise and controlling his diet.

For another Health Champion, Mr Ahmad Subronto, 48, Chairman of Admiralty Garden Community Club Malay Activity Executive Committee (MAEC), his challenge is to stop smoking. So far, he has managed to cut down from two packs of cigarettes per day to about 10 sticks.

Said Mr Hashim, “When I was appointed as a Health Champion, I told myself that I have to be a good example to others. So, I started briskwalking and going to the gym.”

Both Mr Hashim and Mr Ahmad were among 80 Health Champions that were appointed to spearhead the newly formed Health Interest Groups in Sembawang GRC, Nee Soon Central Single Member Constituency (SMC) and Nee Soon East SMC. Led by grassroots organisations in the three districts and supported by North West CDC and Health Promotion Board (HPB), these Health Interest Groups will help to guide the community to lead a healthy lifestyle.

As part of the Interest Group’s programme, HPB will train the champions to take charge of their health by going for regular health screening, seeing a doctor for follow-up upon any abnormal health screening results, and taking actions to live a healthier lifestyle. They were also encouraged to bring another 10 friends to join the programme and facilitate regular meetings.

When asked how he intended to carry out his role as a Health Champion, Mr Hashim said, “I want to get people interested in briskwalking. We have started a briskwalking interest group that now has 16 followers as compared to 10 when we first started. We will also organise health talks which include tips on how to lose weight.”
