national games 2 370x226It was an exciting day as 60 students from various secondary schools and tertiary institutions came together to showcase their creative, self-designed family games and battled it out to be the champion of The National Games Design Competition 2010. The event on Sunday, 18 July 2010, attracted a turnout of more than 500 people. Families from different walks of life enjoyed themselves while trying out the games.

This is the first time the People’s Association Family Life Section is partnering the Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Design to organise a games design competition to encourage  family bonding and foster stronger family ties. The competition is open to all students from primary to tertiary levels, and attracted a total of 43 entries from 140 participants.

The youths were challenged to create board games with the theme of family. To better understand what would appeal to and help families interact in a fun way, youths gathered feedback and inputs from their family members. The Champion of the Tertiary Category, Mr Daryl Bong, 19, shared, “This competition is a great platform for me to spend quality time with my family as we go through countless plays to create my final game”. His winning board game, “Burglar”, requires team work and cooperation between family members to keep the burglar out and their family intact. This mirrors real life situation where all family members must put in effort to build a strong, happy family.

Guest-of-Honour, Mr Michael Palmer, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC and Adviser to Pasir Ris-Punggol GROs, remarked “By bonding families of common interests together, we will also be bonding the wider community and strengthening the fabric of the nation.”
