Magic Challenge proves a hit with families

29 December 2011 0 comments

Magic ChallengeLearning magic tricks to stay active and bond with fellow seniors, that’s what the Jurong Spring CC Senior Citizens’ Executive Committee’s (SCEC) Magic Interest Group promoted through the PA Active Agers’ Magic Challenge.

Through collaborations with The International Brotherhood of Magicians (Ring 115), and supported by the PA Active Ageing Council, the Magic Challenge event held on 18 December 2011 saw seniors pitting their skills against one another.

This year, a family category was introduced to encourage participants to involve their  family members in their acts.

Mr Teng Kin Chai, 62, was one of the participants who took part in the challenge with his daughter-in-law, Mdm Kelly Kao, 28, and granddaughter, 8. Through the numerous rehearsals and practice, the three-generational family bonded and developed greater understanding of each other. Other family members also came to support and cheered them on at the challenge. Mr Teng hoped to continue perfecting his magic skills and stay active through this meaningful activity.

Together with a group of magic enthusiasts, the Jurong Spring CC SCEC also set up a Magic Interest Group in August 2007 to encourage Seniors to stay active. Currently, the Interest Group is made up of more than 20 seniors, aged 50 to 70 years old. They meet at the CC every weekend for training and perform at various community events to much cheer and applause.

Mr Lee Khang Teng, PBM, Chairman of the Jurong Spring CC Magic Interest Group and SCEC said , “We would like to spread the love for magic to fellow citizens, young and old, across the island through the Magic Challenge.  Practicing and performing magic tricks helped  to delay the onset ofmental and physical ageing. We hope that more seniors will learn magic tricks as a way to stay physically, mentally and socially active. The Interest Group is also an ideal platform to foster family bonding as both the young and the old can enjoy magic performances together.”

Mr Lee Khang Teng led by example and encouraged his wife to join the Magic Interest Group too. Through the participation in the Interest Group, Mdm Lee broadened her social network, made new friends and became more positive towards life.

Mr Lee Beng Teack, 68, is another member of the Jurong Spring CC Magic Interest Group whose passion in magic since young inspired him to participate in the Interest Group to brush up his magic tricks skills. He persuaded his wife to participate too and together they honed their creativity by performing new tricks and practicing together.

“With the generous applause and encouragements from the audience, my wife and I performed outstandingly each time. Ever since, our love and chemistry for each other has also taken a great leap forward. It was really splendid! I love Jurong Spring Magic Interest Group!” Mr Lee enthused.
