Participant at Sport Stacking Challenge 2011The PA and the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) came together for the first time to organise the PA-WSSA Active Agers’ Sport Stacking Challenge on 30 October 2011.

Held at the Braddell Heights CC, the challenge saw 40 seniors, aged 50 and above and 30 children, aged between the ages of seven and 12 participating.

The oldest participant at the challenge was 74 year old, Mr Foong Foo Kheong. When asked on his motivation for sport stacking, he said, “Sport Stacking requires the use of both hands.  Although my arms feel a bit sore after each practice session, I feel that sport stacking keeps my mind active and also trains me to be patient.”

Mr Roy Lim Teck Chwee, 54 years old, winner of the Senior Individual Category with a timing of 3.59 seconds said, “Sport Stacking is good for our mind and body.  All of us trained hard for this competition but the practice sessions were fun, something we looked forward to.  We will continue to practice sport stacking and encourage more residents to join us.”

Mr Bernard Khoo, PBM, Chairman of the Braddell Heights’ Active Ageing Committee mentioned, “Although Sport Stacking is a sport that is popular among youths as it involves speed and precision, it is also beneficial to seniors. Through the action of stacking the cups, the seniors are exercising both their mind and body.  It is a simple and fun activity that the seniors can do together with their family and friends.  The seniors and youths also exchanged tips on sport stacking through this challenge”.

This challenge was part of the PA Active Agers’ Mind Games Festival led by the PA Active Ageing Council to promote active ageing among seniors.

Currently, more than 40 CCs and Residents’ Committees conduct Sport Stacking activities for their senior residents.  If you are keen to take part in this mental sport activity, please contact Jeremy at 62383423 or email Jeremy_Johnson_Lim@pa.gov.sg to join us today!
