PA partners organisations to promote community bonding

PA Community Spirit Awards 2011

Working with grassroots organisations (GROs) and community and corporate partners to build and bridge communities has always been PA’s strategy. Working closely with our GROs and partners also help to ensure that residents in the various constituencies and across districts benefit from our wide-range of programmes from social assistance schemes to lifelong learning.

The Singapore Kite Association is one such partner who worked closely with the Punggol Meridien RC to organise the Punggol North Kite Day which aimed to foster community bonds between residents and kite flying enthusiasts. The partnership between Punggol North GROs and the Singapore Kite Association made what was initially a small-scale event into a signature international kite flying event which saw the participation of both local and international kite flying enthusiasts. As kite flying is an activity that could be enjoyed by residents of all ages, this event which succeeded in attracting over 4,700 youths and their families helped promote inter-generational bonding and strengthened family ties.

Educational institutions such as the ITE Colleges, Singapore Polytechnic and Bukit Panjang Government High to name a few too served the community alongside PA, our GROs and Community Development Councils (CDCs) in our bid to build social capital.

The ITE College East for instance had worked closely with the South East CDC and Volunteer Welfare Organisations in the Safe Home Project which aimed to improve the living conditions of frail and needy elderly residents living in 1 or 2 rooms rental flats in the South East District. These students visit the homes of the elderly residents and install grab bars, lever taps, shower sets and door latches in a bid to reduce cases of elderly falling in their homes.

To show our appreciation to our network of partners, PA recognises the GROs and partners’ excellent contributions through the annual Community Spirit Awards presentation.

The ceremony which was held on 8 June 2011 at Fairmont Hotel saw a total of 51 organisations being conferred the PA Community Spirits (PACS) award. One of them was the Al-Iman mosque, which won the Excellence Award under the “Employers of GRLs” category. The mosque not only serves the Malay-Muslim community, but also the wider spectrum of society. We live in a multi-racial and religious society and therefore it is pertinent that we reach out to the community through the grassroots organisations,” said Mr Paiman Supangat, General Manager, Northwest Mosque Cluster from Al-Iman Mosque.

This year, the “Partners of PA” award category was introduced to extend appreciation to even more partners. This new category recognises organisations which made direct contributions to PA and/or contributions that cut across several constituencies and/or CDCs.

In total, 112 nominations were received and 73 organisations were nominated for the first time this year.

PA’s Deputy Chairman, Mr Lim Swee Say, who presented the awards to the recipients, also shared on the importance for PA to work closely with GROs, community and corporate partners to strive for an ALL C.A.R.E. community where all channels of communications be it traditional or social media are used to reach out to residents and bring people of different age groups and races who are living in either the public and private estates together as one united community.
