Project Angelz – Getting youths to care for the elderly

In action

While other youths his age were probably hanging out at Orchard Road or playing computer games, Nanyang Polytechnic student Soh Wei Liang spent his entire weekend spring cleaning the house of a stranger.  Not that he minded it one bit.

Wei Liang was one of the 100 youths who had volunteered to clean and spruce up the homes of 15 needy MacPherson residents.

Appropriately called Project Angelz, the MacPherson CC Youth Executive Committee (YEC) roped in members from other YECs and students from Singapore and Nanyang Polytechnics.

One of the challenges that the group faced was to convince the seniors to allow them to enter their homes. Vice-Chairman of MacPherson CC YEC, Keith Loy, said, “Some were hesitant to let us into their homes and were wary about us touching their stuff.”

Besides gaining the trust of the seniors, the youths had to be willing to get “down and dirty” said chairman of Mountbatten YEC, Iswandie Wanhar.

The project gave the youths an opportunity to lend a helping hand to the needy, and for them to learn how to communicate with seniors.

The weekend was not only meaningful for Wei Liang and his friends, but also for the beneficiaries of this project.  One of the beneficiaries, Mdm Carol Tang said, “Today is one of the happiest days in my life. I want to thank all the Project Angelz participants.”
