Residents and grassroots keep Yuhua clean

For maintaining the highest level of cleanliness in common areas like void decks, lift lobbies, staircases, playgrounds and car parks, Yuhua Zone 5 Residents’ Committee (RC) recently won the “Most Litter-Free Estate” award at 5th South West District Public Health Awards held on 24th January 2010.
The South West District Public Health Awards comprised three key categories namely, “A Litter-Free Environment”, “Clean, Dry and Sparkling Public Toilets” and “A Community That Does Not Spread Bugs”. It was encouraging to note that Jurong East (254) Hawker’s Association under the Yuhua constituency also clinched the “Clean, Dry and Sparkling Public Toilets” award for the 4th year running under the “Hawker Centres” sub-category.
It was not by chance that Yuhua Zone 5 RC won the award. The RC believed that a clean estate could only be achieved through education and co-operation of the entire neighbourhood. Thus, RC members regularly reminded residents to keep the estate clean whenever they organised activities or during their house-to-house visits.
The RC’s efforts paid off as more residents heeded the advice. Residents who had bulky items to dispose would call the Jurong Town Council or made the extra effort to sort and bring their recyclable items to the neighbourhood collection point on a weekly basis.
Yuhua Zone 5 RC chairman, Mr Chan Chee Yong said, “I would like to extend my greatest appreciation to my committee members, Jurong Town Council and all residents for playing a part to keep the neighbourhood clean and green.”
As someone who does not take things for granted, Mr Chan knows that keeping the estate clean is an ongoing effort. He encourages all RC members and residents to keep up the good work and urges all residents, “to contact the Town Council to dispose of large and bulky objects instead of leaving it at the corridor”.
