Ride to Sunrise 2011

Night cycling More than 400 youths from all walks of life caught the first ray of light together as they plied the streets of Singapore in a night-to-dawn cycling event “Ride to Sunrise” on Saturday, 10 December 2011.

Jointly organised by 20 grassroots organisations (GROs), including Community Club (CC) Youth Executive Committees (YECs), Community Sports Clubs (CSCs) and a Community Emergency and Engagement Committee (C2E), “Ride to Sunrise” provided a platform for cycling enthusiasts to come together, as well as promoted the importance of safe cycling. The event was also held in conjunction with People’s Association (PA) Youth Movement’s 40th Anniversary and the CSCs’ 35th Anniversary celebrations.

Mr Lim Zhi Wang, Organising Chairman of “Ride to Sunrise” and Sports & Wellness Secretary & Service Learning Secretary of The Frontier CC YEC said, “This is the first time the GROs worked hand-in-hand to organise a large scale cycling event for enthusiasts. By collaborating with other GROs, we were able to tap on one another’s expertise such as C2E’s first aid skills, and CSCs’ experience in running cycling activities. In addition, we reached out to many residents via the network of each committee.”

Besides engaging youths, “Ride to Sunrise” also attracted residents of all ages. The youngest and oldest participants were 12 and 75 years old respectively. Mdm Ong Seu Ching, a senior participant amongst many who joined the event with their family members, said, “This is my second night cycling event. My previous night cycling experience was very memorable as it allowed me to explore different parts of Singapore at night. I thought it was very enriching and interesting. As such, I decided to encourage my husband and daughter to join me this time so that we could exercise and enjoy the night scenery together.”

Mr Arthur Fong, Grassroots Adviser to Clementi GROs, also joined the participants in cycling. Other guests included Grassroots Adviser to Yew Tee GROs, Mr Alex Yam Ziming, and Chief Executive Director of PA, Mr Yam Ah Mee.
