Point, Shoot and ExploreMore than 700 seniors of different ages and races gathered at Admiral Garden CC’s hard court on Sunday, 13 November 2011, to celebrate Woodlands Active Ageing Festival.

Jointly organised by Woodlands Senior Citizens’ Executive Committee (SCEC), Admiral Garden SCEC and Woodlands New Media Champions (NMC), it is a joint celebration between five divisions in the Sembawang GRC.

A highlight of the Woodlands festival is the launch of Singapore’s 1st Community-Based “Point, Shoot and Explore” – a new media initiative to encourage seniors to utilise new media platforms for their added convenience.

“Point, Shoot, Explore” is a ground-up initiative supported and implemented by the Woodlands Grassroots Organisations (GROs) to reach out to residents more effectively and disseminate information on community events and courses at Community Clubs (CCs) in a systematic manner.

To gain access to these community information, all the residents needto do is to scan using their smartphones, tablet PCs or any suitable electronic devices the Quick Response (QR) code found on the publicity materials and information from the OneConnect.SG website will be transmitted to them via their devices.

It was certainly an eye opener for the seniors as they explored the “Point, Shoot, Explore” technology first hand. Youths volunteers were also on hand to guide the seniors to find interesting information such as upcoming briskwalking activities in the estate.

“It is an innovative way to disseminate information quickly although it may take a while for the public, especially the seniors to get accustomed to this new technology”, said Wei Jie a 29 years old resident who attended the event.

Seniors were impressed and found the technology interesting and convenient to use.

Resident, Mr Lek Yew Kiat, 57 years old, commented, “This Point, Shoot and Explore provided convenience for the seniors.  In future, we can find out more about community activities and CC courses easily.”

Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Adviser to Sembawang GROs, launched the festival. Other guests included Grassroots Adviser to Woodlands GROs, Ms Ellen Lee, PBM and PA’s Chief Executive Director, Mr Yam Ah Mee.
