YOUths @ PAYM Care for the Community

The bare walls of Block 411 at Teck Ghee constituency have been given a new lease of life. Teck Ghee Community Club (CC) Youth Executive Committee (YEC) together with residents, came together to deck them with colourful hand-painted murals depicting scenes of the community in action.
This meaningful project was one of the 70 community service projects which took place island wide over the last two weekends of October as part of the People’s Association Youth Movement’s (PAYM) initiative, “YOUths Care @ PAYM!”.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong launched the event on 22 October 2011. Almost 5,000 youths from the PAYM’s network, such as members of the YECs, PAYM Service-Learning Clubs, Friends of PAYM, interest groups and Residents’ Committee / Neighbourhood Committee Youth Chapters, were brought together in a meaningful bid to give back to their communities.
From a concert by intellectually-challenged youths to the collection of canned food items for needy residents, throwing parties for children from homes and needy families to eco projects to spread green messages to residents, no project was too small for our youth with big hearts, who brought smiles to many faces over the two weekends.
Through‘YOUths Care @ PAYM!’ the PAYM hopes to inspire more youths to come forward to initiate or participate in community service programmes that will bring about an impact to the community.
Said Ms Khoo Hanzhi, Arts and Culture Secretary of Teck Ghee CC YEC, “When I decided to volunteer, I thought about the skills I have which I could contribute to my community. I was good at art and felt that I could help with the design and painting of an art mural to dress up the void decks in Teck Ghee. So I volunteered to be one of the mural designers. I am glad that we were able to do something for our community by brightening up the surroundings. We will continue to paint more art murals for other blocks in the area!”
