Sports

The People’s Association works through Community Sports Clubs (CSCs) to foster community bonding through a wide array of sports activities for residents to participate and interact with one another.

The CSCs’ flagship programmes include the Community Sports Festival, the People’s Association Children’s Football League, and the Community Games. Other activities organised by the CSCs include brisk walks, mass swims, sports carnivals, bowling, badminton, football and sepak takraw. Here are some highlights of their key programmes.

Community Sports Festival

Community Sports Festival 2011

The annual Community Sports Festival (CSF) is a signature programme of the CSCs. The CSF is led by the CSC Council, in partnership with the five Community Development Councils (CDCs) and other grassroots organisations, with each of the five districts holding various activities during the Festival catering to the interest and passion of its residents. Focusing on recreation and fun so that people of all abilities can participate, the Festival features community sports that offer opportunities to bring people together, to build long-lasting friendships, foster teamwork and to cultivate stronger social networks through shared interests.

Community Games

The Community Games, previously known as Inter-Constituency Games offer opportunities for residents to represent their constituencies at a competitive level, and to foster community bonding through sports. Currently the Games comprise a series of sports such as badminton, basketball, bowling, football, running, sepak takraw, swimming and table-tennis.

PA Children’s Football League

The PA Children’s Football League is a fun programme involving children, regardless of gender, and their parents from various ethnic groups to come together and play sports to foster stronger family and community bonds. The programme was piloted in 2004 to offer opportunities for children to improve their motor skills, social skills and interactive skills through team sports. Parental involvement is key to this initiative and parents are encouraged to help out as coaching assistants, and/or volunteers. Workshops are conducted for parents to equip them with the knowledge on basic first-aid, and basic rules of the sports. The programme strives to bring out the best in every child where “Every Child is a Champion”.
