PA to Expand “Neighbourhood Kakis” Initiative to Keep Seniors Active and Connected to the Community

The People's Association (PA) will expand its Neighbourhood Kakis initiative to more constituencies, including Mountbatten, as part of its efforts to keep seniors active, socially connected and meaningfully engaged in their neighbourhoods.

  1. The announcement was made by Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Deputy Chairman of PA, at the official opening of the new Mountbatten Community Club (CC) on Saturday, 4 April 2026, where he was joined by Ms Gho Sze Kee, Adviser to Mountbatten Grassroots Organisations (GROs), and about 1,500 residents.

Empowering seniors to contribute in simple but meaningful ways

  1. First piloted in 2024 as part of PA's efforts to expand community participation, the Neighbourhood Kakis initiative enables seniors aged 60 and above, as well as young seniors aged 50 to 59, to take on simple, flexible neighbourhood tasks that can be completed within an hour. These include delivering food to seniors living alone, packing and distributing groceries to low-income families, and restocking community fridges. Seniors will receive a token payment of $2 per completed task.

  2. Since its launch, more than 1,400 seniors have signed up, and over 30,000 neighbourhood tasks across more than 20 types of activities have been completed. The initiative is designed to empower seniors not just as beneficiaries of support, but as active contributors with valuable skills and life experience to give back to the community.

  3. Singapore is close to becoming a super-aged society, where more than 21 per cent of the population is aged 65 and above. PA's Neighbourhood Kakis initiative is part of a broader shift towards helping seniors stay healthy, socially connected and mentally active, while fostering a stronger "We First" society.

  4. The initiative will be supported digitally through the PA Community App from May 2026 onwards, which allows seniors to browse and sign up for available tasks conveniently, and receive payment for completed tasks through an in-app e-wallet, usable at any NETS SG-QR merchant. While the app is currently in its beta phase, PA will continue to enhance its features and progressively scale up the Neighbourhood Kakis initiative to more constituencies.

New Mountbatten Community Club to complement community engagement efforts

  1. The expansion of Neighbourhood Kakis to include Mountbatten constituency in a later phase complements the opening of the new Mountbatten Community Club, which features programmes targeting seniors' wellness. The purpose-built facility will offer specialised programming tailored to different age groups to encourage community participation.

  2. The new CC features Gym Tonic, a specialised fitness facility designed specifically for seniors and equipped with hydraulic machines that provide safe, low-impact strength training. The facility has welcomed approximately 100 senior residents since it opened in January 2026 through a partnership with Lien Foundation and House of Joy. The CC will also champion inclusive sports through seated floorball, an adaptive game that allows seniors of varying physical abilities to participate safely whilst gaining physical, mental and social benefits.

  3. Ms Gho Sze Kee, Grassroots Adviser to Mountbatten Grassroots Organisations (GROs), is committed to improving accessibility of support for seniors and caregivers. Looking ahead, seniors can look forward to programmes in partnership with Mountbatten GROs, including the Seniors Festival on 16 May 2026, which will feature workshops and excursions designed to engage them and strengthen community connections.
