Co-located facilities all under one roof at Heartbeat@Bedok

Can you guess how many footballs fields can fill up the land area at the Heartbeat@Bedok complex? The answer is 3

Officially opened in February 2018, Heartbeat@Bedok is Singapore’s second community and lifestyle hub that houses multiple agencies managing different facilities, such as a community club (Kampong Chai Chee CC), polyclinic (Bedok Polyclinic), Bedok public library, senior care centre, ActiveSG East Bedok sport centre, and F&B and retail outlets in the heart of Bedok Town Centre.

As a mature town that was developed in the early 1980s, Bedok Town’s amenities were located at various locations. With older demographics and changing aspirations of the residents especially young families, it became evident to revitalise the town by relocating the amenities and community facilities to provide greater convenience.

In 2013, to ensure the new complex meets the needs of residents, public opinions were solicited from more than 11,000 people to get ideas and feedback on the type of programmes they would like. Residents had preferred a single location for family activities and family-friendly amenities that catered to all ages. These suggestions were incorporated into the design and development of the building facilities at Heartbeat@Bedok, which also took into account the urban design features consolidated under HDB’s ‘Remaking Our Heartland’ (ROH) program for Bedok Town Centre which was made public in 2011.

The complex is now located right in the heart of the Bedok Town Centre within walking distance from the Bedok MRT station and Bus Interchange as well as nearby commercial malls. These make it easier for residents to come by for morning exercises at the atrium, quick swimming sessions at the pool and participate in many other integrated community programmes to enhance their quality of life.

Built upon a formerly forested site, the main theme of greenery also helps to cool the building and save energy. The community-centric design was premised on an environmental and sustainable approach with the objective of creating a distinct and warm green community space that captures the aspirations of Bedok residents.

To date, its unique design has helped it win numerous architectural awards such as:

• BCA Green Mark Platinum Award 2017;
• BCA Universal Design Mark Award 2017, GoldPlus;
• The American Architecture Prize 2017 Winners: Winner in Landscape Architecture/Small Scale Landscape Projects; and
• Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival Awards 2015: Finalist in the Leisure-Led Development- Future Projects Category.
• Asia Pacific Property Awards 2018, Singapore Mixed-use Architecture, 5 Star Award Winner
