One of Singapore’s earliest Community Clubs (CC) – Hillview CC has returned to its original location to serve residents with fresh programmes and initiatives. Formerly called the Princess Elizabeth Estate Community Centre, it was officially opened on 5 May 1963 by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

It was eventually relocated to a void deck at Bukit Batok West and was replaced by Bukit Gombak Community Centre. Despite this, it had served generations of residents through its facilities and programmes.

Following calls from residents for an eco-friendly CC, Hillview CC incorporates lush greenery on its exterior and interior facades. It also has a special rain harvesting feature which would help to conserve water.

With its official opening on Sunday, 5 May 2019, residents in the neighbourhood can look forward to fresh programmes and new facilities at the new CC. This includes more open and interactive communal spaces for residents to carry out their activities.

Through the efforts of Bukit Gombak Grassroots Organisations, there are several fresh and innovative community programmes that appeal to the young and elderly. For example, Bukit Gombak EAGLES Interact Club (BGEIC) was set up in 2015 to nurture young leaders from amongst the recipients of the Edusave Award for Achievement, Good Leadership and Service (EAGLES) in Bukit Gombak.

In addition, there are a number of meaningful collaborations with community partners which offer a variety of innovative community programmes to promote social bonding and integration among residents from the public and private estates in Bukit Gombak constituency.

Resident and mother of two, Cheryl Tan, 37 appreciates that the new CC is both conducive for young families and eco-friendly. She said: “The eco-friendly design of the CC is attractive. The place is airy and breezy, which makes it comfortable to chill at one of the cafes in the CC or to bring the kids over for activities.”
