“Cooking for a family of six can be expensive. My grandson and I are very happy as we got to purchase some chicken wings and prawns for the family. These are some of the items that we normally do not buy.”
 - Ms Ho Poh Choo, 58, a beneficiary resident from Project We Care Jalan with your Buddy* (Phase 2).

About 100 low income families from Toa Payoh would be treated to grocery shopping trips at their neighbourhood supermarket to purchase household necessities and mini treats for their family, thanks to the Project We Care initiative, “Jalan with Your Buddy”.

Organised by Project We Care, it offers an opportunity for residents to shop for items that they do not have extra financial means to purchase for, while enhancing the social well-being of these residents at the same time. With over 10 separate engagements with 20 families in each session, our corporate volunteers kick-start their befriending journeys with the beneficiaries through chit-chat sessions before bringing them to shop at a nearby supermarket.

The inaugural Jalan With Your Buddy (Phase 2) engagement took place at Toa Payoh Central on Wednesday, 27 June 2018 where 12 volunteers from Franklin Offshore brought 22 low income households out to “Jalan” (walk).  The Franklin Offshore team also sponsored a sumptuous buffet tea spread at Toa Payoh Community Club Hall.

Two more sessions took place on Friday, 13 July and Sunday, 15 July 2018 where corporate volunteers from De Lage Landen and Maybank participated in the programme. To date, a total of 50 volunteers have engaged over 50 low-income households.

“I am thankful for the help provided by PA and the volunteers as I am able to purchase the things that I need with the vouchers given. This will help us reduce our financial load.”

*Jointly organised by the People’s Association/Project We Care and Bishan-Toa Payoh Grassroots Organisations, the Project We Care "Jalan with your Buddy" (Phase 1) programme that was held in November 2017, has benefited 200 needy households so far. Through the needs-based shopping approach, low-income families were able to be equipped with a spread of household essentials such as mattress, pillow, electrical appliances, health products, clothing and more.
